How to be an effective teacher based on your
experiences as a second language learner.
Learning new things can be challenging
especially when it comes to a second language learning. To learn another
language efficiently, we have to practice the language in our daily life such
as try to expose ourselves in English conversations. Most people face trouble
in learning another language because they have a first impression that this
matter is difficult. There are too many grammar rules in writings and in
communications that makes English seems hard to learn. Based on my experiences
as a second language learner, worrying about our ability to speak fluently and
use the proper words always be the causes that make English very hard for us to
cope and adapt. We are always afraid of making mistakes which leads to failure.
From these thoughts, we can be an effective teacher by having a greater
motivation in learning the language to understand English better.
As a teacher, we need to remember that learning
English is a process that takes time to understand and requires lots of efforts
to get better at it. Nevertheless, we should be able to find an effective way
by taking things progressively by helping the students in improving their
knowledge step by step. When I was in primary school, my English teacher would
assist us in studying and revising English regularly to help us understand and
get used to it. This can be seen through vocabulary activities. The students
will update new words and respective meanings every day in their album cards.
Then, they will review the words that they have learnt after the lesson. This
will improve their English level to a wider range of vocabularies. To be an
effective teacher, we can make learning process more creative and interesting.
For instance, listening to good songs and asking the students about the
vocabularies in those songs. Through this way, we shall grab the chance to
implement our innovation skills by teaching language with simple method
continuously.
Moreover, teachers who were a second
language learner must realize how important communication skills are in the
learning process. Whether a teacher is successful in being an effective
teacher, it is determined by what have been contributed. Despite, good in writing,
reading and listening, speaking skills is the most challenging part for
teachers. However, successful teacher comes from good communicators. I remember
the way my school taught students the basic methods of communication skills. My
confidence level increased through public speaking, drama and poem recitations.
It also helps me in improving my pronunciations in English. Students will enjoy
and actively participate activities in classrooms which encourage students to
speak in informal and formal situations during class. Teachers should always
give positive feedbacks and motivational supports in order to improve students’
speaking skills. In reality, speaking skills is one of the criteria that should
be concerned and make students to have the courage to speak in their daily
lives.
Having to learn a new language necessarily
involves developing writing skills. An effective teacher can help students to
understand the grammar rules in writing. There are too many grammatical
competence which required language user to master the vocabularies, grammars,
spellings and sentences formation. Thus, by writing a diary can encourage
students to describe their daily activities and make them excited when writing
it. According to my experience, a ‘Writing Camp’ shall improve their writing
skills directly. In this case, to achieve the objectives in learning writing
skills, teachers should help students to overcome a writer’s mental block by
trying to make them calm and encourage them to write freely without bounds.
Whenever teachers carry out these sort of activities, be sure to give students
feedbacks on how to correct their writing and appraise their efforts. Group
discussions with classmates and teachers will improve their writing skills
greatly as this would help them to organize their ideas to form essays.
As a conclusion, learning English can be
fun if it is being taught effectively. It starts with curiosity, enthusiasm and
eagerness to learn English as a second language. An effective teacher may
foster a good learning process by conducting absorbing activities, exercises
and practices as well as apply pedagogy techniques correctly. If we
beIieve and have optimistic thoughts that we can do well, then we can do it
definitely. To be an effective teacher, a positive self-image will give more
confidence in improving language skills for students and teachers.
